BANGKOK, THAILAND – It is not a coincidence that Chevrolet decided to reveal the new Captiva Abalone White in Thailand on March 8, International Women’s Day. The new color – one of the most popular across Asia Pacific – highlights the Captiva’s styling. It will appeal to the increasing number of female SUV-C buyers, who now make up over 50 percent of the market.

Una Tan, Director of Marketing and Customer Experience for Chevrolet Sales Thailand, explained: “We strongly believe the combination of styling, technology and safety features in the popular Abalone White will make the SUV especially appealing to women.”

The automotive industry has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. But according to Tan, GM and Chevrolet are committed to building an inclusive and diverse workplace where everyone feels valued. Approximately 37 percent of the leadership roles at GM Thailand, GM Global Propulsion Systems in Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand are held by women.

“We see greater creativity and efficiency with more diversity,” said Tan. “This has not just contributed to making GM a workplace of choice in Thailand, but has also increased our ability to meet changing customer demands with higher-quality products such as the new 2017 Captiva Abalone White.”

Women lead many key functions and teams at GM Thailand, such as Finance, Government Relations, Legal, Product Planning, Quality, Sales, Marketing and Manufacturing.

One of the female leaders, Yanisa Suwankham – senior engineering manager at the Paint Shop in GM Thailand’s Rayong manufacturing facility – was on hand to discuss the new paint program that GM set up to develop the new Abalone White color.

“In order to create the shining and sparkling pearl white color, GM had to separate the painting robot into two processes. The first one is to spray solid white followed by pearl painting on top. We put our special attention to control the processes and quality for perfect color tone and shade,” she said.

“The new Abalone White color process also requires fewer steps and reduces production time and waste. As a result, this trendy color is environmentally friendly, as it saves energy.”

The numbers speak for themselves. According to research conducted by PPG Coating, leading producers of advanced automotive paint, nearly 60 percent of consumers identified color as a major deciding factor in the vehicle-buying process.

The 2015 Global Color Popularity study pointed out that 35 percent of new cars bought were white. In Asia Pacific markets, white remained most popular (44 percent), followed by black (16 percent), natural and silver (tied at 10 percent), and gray (7 percent).

The 2017 Captiva will also be available in five other exterior colors: Black Meet Kettle Metallic, Summit White, Switchblade Silver, Satin Steel Gray and Auburn Brown.

The SUV comes with modern technology, including the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that provides connectivity and convenience for smartphone users through Apple CarPlay and Siri Eyes Free functionality.

In line with Chevrolet’s deep commitment to safety, the new Captiva is equipped with advanced active safety technology, including Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Park Assist. These features use radar sensors located in the rear bumper to monitor the vehicle’s side blind spots, help male and female drivers maneuver when backing up or changing lanes, and enable them to potentially avoid accidents.

During today’s event, media were invited to join the Art & Inspiration of White photography workshop conducted by Pongsak Tagtiwaja, a guest photographer on “America’s Next Top Model,” and Fonthip Watcharatrakul, a famous Thai model and actress.

Under the theme of White on Abalone White, the workshop showcased photography techniques using two different types of lighting, reflecting the functional and emotional appeal of photos. The theme was aligned with the Be Bold for Change theme of this year’s International Women’s Day.

According to the professional photographer, the glittering Abalone White color reflects women’s beauty and purity, and is suitable for glamorous women such as “Pooklook” Fonthip, who uses a white car.

Attendees were also taught professional techniques for DSLR and smartphone photography.

The new Captiva will be unveiled to the public at the 38th Bangkok International Motor Show, which runs from March 29 to April 9, 2017, at Impact Muangthong Thani.
