Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo Hits the Track

Developed as part of the Vision Gran Turismo project, the Chaparral 2X VGT concept is inspired by the innovative race cars Chaparral Racing and Chevrolet partnered on more than 45 years ago.

DETROIT – An online update including the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo (VGT), introduced at this year’s Los Angeles International Auto Show, is available worldwide for fans of the PlayStation® 3 racing game, Gran Turismo® 6.

Developed by Chevrolet’s Advanced Design team with direct input from Chaparral founder Jim Hall, the racecar concept was developed exclusively for the Vision Gran Turismo project, which celebrates the future of automotive design and innovation.

“The Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision GT serves as an example of what our designers are capable of when they are cut loose, no holds barred,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “It’s a fantasy car in every sense of the word.”

Clay Dean, GM’s executive director of advanced design, added. “This concept is an audacious and ambitious vision – and one that demonstrates to a new audience how Chevy’s engineering and design teams challenge norms and explore the technologies of tomorrow. It also an ode to a unique partnership that pioneered ground-breaking technologies that are used today on the track and the street.”

Its concept propulsion system features a mid-mounted laser beamed-energy propulsion system, which pulses beams of light that focus in a shroud, creating shock waves that generate 900 horsepower worth of thrust. It will be capable of a 0-60 acceleration in 1.5 seconds.

Gran Turismo gamer Armen Aghakhan was among the first to “drive” the Chaparral 2X VGT at the L.A. auto show.

“Driving the Chaparral 2X VGT was truly a blast,” said Aghakhan. “Much like its predecessors, this car is truly revolutionary for its time and I am one of the few lucky ones to get to experience this car first hand.”

The race car’s propulsion and suspension systems are built around the driver, enabling progressive strategies of active and driver-adjustable aerodynamics, eliminating the need for large, conventional wings and other aero devices used to generate grip-enhancing downforce, which helps reduce the overall mass of the Chaparral 2X VGT’s minimalist structure. Only essential elements are on board, with instrumentation, for example, projected on the driver’s helmet visor.

How to download update on Gran Turismo®6

After Update 1.15 has been installed, the car can be purchased from the “Vision GT” area within the “CARS” section in "My Home.” Alternatively, it is also possible to obtain the car by completing a lap (regardless of the lap time) in the new Seasonal Event, available for a limited time.
