Chevrolet Invites Thailand to ‘Play for Dreams’

  • Chevrolet launches a series of football-related activities in Thailand, including “Play for Dreams” nationwide youth football talent search and dealership promotions

BANGKOK, THAILAND – With the World Cup tournament underway, Chevrolet is getting into the football action by kicking off a nationwide search to find Thailand’s best young players and send them on a football trip of their dreams.

The “Play for Dreams” campaign answers the question asked in Chevrolet’s new global football-themed campaign: “What Do You #PlayFor?” The campaign commemorates the first season of Chevrolet’s seven-year shirt sponsorship of Manchester United football club, and will eventually send five young Thai football players and 20 lucky Chevrolet customers to a Man-U match in England.

Manchester United is hugely popular in the region, claiming 330 million fans in Asia – half its world total – including 20 million fans in Thailand. Many Thai Man-U fans channel their enthusiasm for team by playing in football leagues and tournaments around the country.

“Thai football fans of all ages love playing the game, and dream of attending a big Premier League match. Chevrolet will make that dream come true,” said Marcos Purty, managing director of GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand.

“When you think about it, Chevrolet and football is a perfect match. This great American brand and globally beloved game both celebrate the value of teamwork, share a strong can-do spirit and belief in boundless possibilities. Those values are important to Thais too, especially its young people, and that’s why we invite them to Play for Dreams,” Purty said.

From June 21 to July 26, Chevrolet and Zico Foundation, an association dedicated to using football as a development tool, will search Thailand’s 10 provinces for 20 children to attend a football academy in Bangkok, August 11-13.

Province try-outs include:

  • June 21: Klip Bua Stadium, Kanchanaburi and Chonburi Stadium, Chonburi
  • June 28: Rajabhat University Stadium, Surat Thani and Chira Nakhon Stadium, Songkhla
  • July 5: Provincial Administrative Organization Stadium, Chaiyaphum and Khaophlong Stadium, Chainat
  • July 19: Main Stadium, Sakon Nakhon and SriNarong Stadium, Surin
  • July 26: 700th Anniversary Chiangmai Sports Complex, Chiang Mai and Boonsom Martin Stadium, Sukhothai

With permission from their parents, kids can register for one of these try-outs at their nearest Chevrolet dealership, or by calling Chevrolet at 1734 dial 7, or visiting Kids who register at a Chevrolet dealership will receive a voucher for a free souvenir when they attend their local try-out.

The try-outs will test each fundamental football skills, such as passing, heading, dribbling, shooting and teamwork. Player fitness also will be tested by standard screening techniques, including slalom, jumping and portable wall exercises.

The kids who advance to the academy in Bangkok in August will receive further testing in football skills and teamwork by Zico association. Ultimately, Zico will select five finalists who will win a trip to England this October to attend the Manchester United match.

“We’re very excited to work with Chevrolet to make Play for Dreams possible. Playing football is not only great fun and excellent exercise, it also teaches wonderful lessons that kids will carry into adulthood,” said Kiatisuk "Zico" Senamuang, head of Zico Foundation and former star of the Thai national football team.

In addition to registering kids for the competition, Chevrolet dealerships across the country are holding special promotions that invite existing customers to “Come Back Home” by bringing their cars in for service, and encourage all-new customers to make a “Big Match” by purchasing new models.

Chevrolet offers the most up-to-date vehicle portfolio in the market, including the Captiva and Trailblazer SUVs, the Colorado pickup, the Spin MPV, and the Sonic and Cruze passenger cars.

Both new and returning customers will have the opportunity to enter a lucky drawing that will send 20 winners (10 from each group) to the Manchester United match in England.
